5 Healthy Halloween Treats

On Halloween your options seem to be limited on the “healthy” treats during ‘trick or treating’ and while attending haunted house parties. So it’s up to you on whether or not you want to engage in a night of feeling a tummy ache after gorging out on unhealthy candy, or you can use the following 5 healthy halloween treats and enjoy every aspect of your evening.

1. Fruit Spider

Fruit Spider Recipe

Recipe Ingredients:

  • Wooden kebab sticks
  • 1 dark plum
  • Black grapes or blueberries; green or red apple chunks, green or red grapes.
  • Plastic googly eyes
  • Raw almond or peanut butter

Recipe Directions:

  1. Clean fruit
  2. Take 16 wooden kebab sticks and break them into 4-inch sections
  3. Skewer grapes on eight of the sticks so that the grapes touch, leaving one grape covering one end as a connector, but leaving the other end bare to poke into the plum.
  4. Repeat on the other eight sticks, inserting the exposed ends into the joints of the previous set of grape sticks at an angle.
  5. Once connected, poke legs into the plum, with four legs on each side.
  6. Gather two googly eyes and attach to front of plum with your choice of raw almond or peanut butter.

2. Frozen Banana Mummies

Halloween Mummy Treats

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 3 large BANANAS
  • 3 tablespoons melted raw COCOA BUTTER
  • 3 tablespoons powdered COCONUT SUGAR
  • CANDY EYES -cacao chocolate chips or raisins

Recipe Directions:

  1. For the beginning– Have the kids peel and slice (butter knife it) the bananas into 1-1/2″ chunks. Skewer bananas with lollipop sticks (available at most craft stores), or use kabob skewers. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze.
  2. For the candy coating- in a small bowl, mix the melted cocoa butter with the coconut sugar. Spoon a little drop of candy coating on a frozen banana and stick on an eye (or two, or three).
  3. Using a spoon, have the kids drizzle candy coating over the bananas in all directions, avoiding the eye. An egg carton turned upside down with little holes poked in the bottom made a good stand as we worked on them.
  4. For the “Things”- You can make the orange shredded coconut by mixing a few drops of yellow and a drop of red food color with some unsweetened shredded coconut. Toast the coconut for a few minutes.
  5. Attach eyes with a dot of candy coating. Drizzle candy coating on to coat front, avoiding eye(s). Sprinkle with coconut. Drizzle to coat back. Sprinkle again. Drizzle to coat top. Sprinkle again. You need to work in stages as the candy coat hardens real quick on the frozen bananas.
